- I’m having another adventurous weekend. All of them seem to be that way. Off horseback riding early for Sheila’s birthday. Keeping it real short today.

- Have you noticed more ads running before YouTube videos? Have you ever purchased anything that was in one of those videos? I haven’t. I don’t even watch them and usually look for the same video without the ad.

* Walk softly and carry a big stick.

I can only imagine the uproar if someone had painted a photo of Jack Layton in this pose.

The Prime Minister’s Office also took to Twitter to voice a reaction to the piece.

“On the Sutherland painting: we’re not impressed. Everyone knows the PM is a cat person,” tweeted Harper spokesman Andrew MacDougall, referring to the canine on the canvas.

I’m liking Andrew MacDougall better every day.

Today on Deep Cuts & Lost Classics… Our new focus this week on DC & LC is what ever happened too that band? This groups monster hits are still played constantly on the radio, but I don’t recall that a thing was said when they called it quits. I know they tour as Journey to this day, but they just disappeared off the radar while they were really big. This is one of my favourite songs by Journey. It’s a deep cut from ‘Escape’.

City Of Cornwall Releases Details of $293,000 Settlement with Robert Menagh – OurHometown.ca

The cost of the settlement is $293,322 which includes salary and benefits. This settlement will be paid out over a period of 105 weeks. Some of the benefit costs would be reduced should Mr. Menagh secure other employment which provides for reasonably similar benefits prior to February 2014.

The terms of the settlement adhere to the terms of the Employment Agreement entered into between Mr. Menagh and the City of Cornwall in December of 2004/ul>

* Doubling down on dumb.

A little comparison here. In the United States Barack Obama is running for his second term by dividing his country. Rich versus poor, black versus white, women versus men, Hispanics versus whites, etc.

In Canada we have our own version of this. The NDP has picked up on this and you’re hearing more of the 1% versus 99% percent talk. The great leader of the federal dippers is dividing the country between east and west to build a voter base in Ontario and Quebec. It’s disgusting and sad, but it also might work.

I’m beginning to think the socialists are doing this as an organized campaign. The wealth re-distributors are everywhere and they’re pushing their rich versus poor agenda. Exactly what the UN thinks it is doing by criticizing Canada over food, while people are starving in sh!thole country’s run by sh!thead dictators is beyond me.

John Ivison from The National Post nails it with this column:

The Book of Deuteronomy noted the poor will always be with us. That said, they would be fewer in number if more countries adopted Canada’s commitment to trade, open markets and democracy, rather than indulge the collectivist fool’s paradise imported by the UN Special Rapporteur.

It is risible that Canada, ranked eighth on The Economist’s Democracy Index, should be lectured on human rights by a representative of the UN council whose current membership includes Russia (#117), China (#141), Congo (#145), Cuba (#126) and Saudi Arabia (#161).

The United Nations should respect and protect the sovereignty of its members, not trample all over it.

I don’t know who said it, but it is indicative of the upside-down world we live in. I might not have the quote quite right, but I’m close… What kind of a country do we live in where poverty is indicated by a rise in the obesity rate?

* The world is cooling.

The climate is not cooperating. The Church of Global Warming is crumbling around them. People are making fun of them. Parents are objecting to their scaring children with their lies. People actually want to warm their homes in winter and cool them in the summer. Meanwhile, using the global warming lies, the Environmental Protection Agency is trying to shut down the entire U.S. coal mining industry and attacking “fracking” to access natural gas. The Department of the Interior has virtually shut down all oil drilling on federal land and offshore. How crazed is all this?

* The Right Opinion

- Today I’ve got a cycle-log from yesterday. I went into Kananaskis yesterday near Bragg Creek and did a 70km ride around the area. The first 25km or so was exploring different roads. The rest was heading up 66 Highway. I’m getting into good shape fast here because the roads force you to get into shape. Some of the hills are very steep, but like I always say, you pay going up and play going down.

This is the real steep section of 66 Highway West of Bragg Creek. I’m not sure what the grade is of the uphill section of this climb, but I rode a hill earlier in the morning that was graded at 7.5%. This hill is much steeper.

Canyon Creek

This is the same hill from the other direction. It drops off fast.

My speed yesterday.

Once you get over the top of the hill you begin to pick up speed real quick. I pedalled at the top and then let it roll to the bottom and three quarters of the way up the other side. It’s a rush to watch the speedometer start to climb up past 50 then 60 them 70km/h. When I went down yesterday a tour bus had parked at the bottom of the hill and I went by them like a flash. It was really a rush.

For a little perspective, if you’re riding the hill at Guindon Park on #2 Highway you can hit just over 50km/h if you pedal real hard. Riding down from Champlain Lookout in Gatineau Park you can hit 70km/h if you pedal hard. The steepness of this hill accelerates you beyond those two places. I’m going to get my speed over 80km/h the next time I ride there.

- Speaking of riding. My Bike-a-thon west ride is coming up a week from Saturday. I’ve got a few hundred dollars collected, but I’d like to add a few hundred more. You can read more about it and donate by going to my Bike-a-thon West page. You can do that above or save yourself a few inches with the mouse and click the link below. Thanks.

- My new column is up at OurHometown.ca. Check it out.

- The City of Cornwall has a new hockey team. A story on TheCornwallDaily.com says the new team isn’t stepping on The Cornwall Colts toes. Uh huh. People only have so much money for entertainment and sports. You have to think some of that money will be siphoned from the Colts and go to the new team. Like I say in my new column… Why do people like treating the Colts like a doormat?

- Want a job as HR Manager in Cornwall, Ontario? Call right now and save the city $21,000 for an executive job search.

Related: City to spend $21K+ for HR manager search firm

One more thing. People with legal problems need not apply.

- There’s a saying in Alberta… Don’t like the weather? Wait 14 minutes. Today we’re expecting a high of 27C… Friday a high of 6C. What’s that all about?

- We took a drive into Kananaskis on Sunday. I had my bike with me and Sheila told me I should take a ride. So I rode 30km through the mountains and it was incredible. Here’s a photo I took with our new camera. It takes panoramic photos. I’m stunned by the incredible result.

- Here’s the camera… It only cost $109 and it’s real small. I was looking for something I could carry on the bike.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a division of the Interior Department, is considering loosening regulations on the killing of bald eagles, the national bird of the United States, to accommodate the development of wind energy sources.

A draft regulation first filed in April would allow businesses to apply for 30-year permits allowing them to kill bald eagles in the course of other legal activities. The length of those permits would be a six-fold increase over the five-year window allowed under current law.

Today on Deep Cuts & Lost Classics… Today, because I’m out of the house, here is a great song from two members of The Turtles (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan). They call themselves The Fluorescent Leach and Eddie, or Flo and Eddie for short. Check out the different influences in this song. Everything from The Beach Boys to The Beatles. I hope you enjoy this Lost Classic.

Myths & Facts – Climate change 101

MYTH 1: Global temperatures are rising at a rapid, unprecedented rate.

FACT: Accurate satellite, balloon and mountain top observations made over the last three decades have not shown any significant change in the long term rate of increase in global temperatures. Average ground station readings do show a mild warming of 0.6 to 0.8C over the last 100 years, which is well within the natural variations recorded in the last millennium.

Because I haven’t got a lot of time today I thought I would do you a tremendous service. I’m beginning to hear more grumblings from the no growth glo-bull warmers. That usually means you’re a liberal. So, spend a bit of time watching the following video. Keep in mind this was produced before the ‘hide the decline’ Climategate e-mail was released and before we found out water levels aren’t rising to flood the Earth, Polar Bears are doing just fine, penguins aren’t melting and neither are all the glaciers and ice floes of the world. Pay particular attention to the part after 42 minutes where Al Gore gets eviscerated.

Isn’t it something that Lord Monckton actually takes questions from people at the end of his lecture? Something Al Gore has never done.

Today on Deep Cuts & Lost Classics… It’s The Who week. As promised yesterday… today it’s two from the Who. We’ll go live from The Who’s “farewell concert” in 1981 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Something that was from the album It’s Hard. I love this track and put it up there with The Who’s best. It’s a true lost classic. Then why not go back to the beginning with rare vocal and writing credits for John Entwistle.

________________________________________________________________________

* Flip flopper in chief.

President Barack Obama ‘came out’ yesterday in support of gay marriage. Back into a corner, forced to change his opinion, flip flopping on his regular stance on the issue, Obama reluctantly changed his mind. The gay lobby should feel used. Obama made the decision to change his mind not because he believes in gay marriage, but because he wants votes. Gays, lesbians… you’re being used.

Barack Obama: a profile in cowardice – The Daily Caller

As for people who don’t believe in gay marriage… I get them too. Marriage has thousands of years as an institution between a man and a woman. It creates stable children and strong families. That’s a good reason to be for civil unions for gays and marriage for others. Personally, I really don’t care if gays get married, I also don’t care if men and women get married. It doesn’t affect me at all.

- Personal story today.

I was thinking about an old friend of mine today when I chose the Deep Cut & Lost Classic. I met Mike Johnston when I was 17. He had just been hired to work in the stockroom at Zellers in Sarnia Ontario (Store #15). Mike was an old guy, he was 24. It might seem strange now, but when you’re 17 anyone over the age of 20 is old. Mike was overweight, short an balding, but he had a huge heart. I remember being in the stockroom one day and Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues was on the radio and I was singing the lyrics (yes I knew them when I was 17). Mike took notice and he asked me what groups I liked. I told him Pink Floyd, The Who, The Stones and Beatles and Led Zeppelin. That got Mike talking. He loved rock and roll and knew it backwards and forwards. After I got to know him he invited me over for a few beers and we sat down to listen to some music. He had a massive record collection. I asked him to play some Pink Floyd and he put on Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen. I asked for The Rolling Stones Hot Rocks album and he put on Exile On Main Street. Mike would tell me I needed to broaden my musical taste. One night we watched Simon & Garfunkel’s Concert in Central Park on VCR. Something I would never consider before I met him. He got me listening to James Taylor, John Prine, Bob Marley and The Clash. Mike loved it all and developed my appreciation for different types of music as well.

A few years went by and I went to school at Fanshawe College in London to take radio broadcasting. Mike continued to work at Zellers. He bought himself a bright yellow Trans Am. It was pretty beat up, but he spent all his time and money fixing the car to get it roadworthy. It was another thing he was totally in to. After I graduated from college I worked at CFCO in Chatham Ontario and was in Sarnia visiting my Mom and Dad. I was going over to see Mike one night and was in the shower when my Dad came into the bathroom and told me Mike was killed in a car accident. Some kid ran a red light and hit Mike’s yellow Trans Am on the drivers side… he died instantly.

It’s funny how people can have an effect on your life. Mike was killed 25 years ago, but to this day it’s impossible to forget his influence on my life. He loved music, but he was a kindhearted person who died too young. That’s who I thought about when I picked today’s song. Mike was the first person who ever played it for me. It is off The Secret Policeman’s Ball album.

One final thought. It was one of those strange conversations you have with a friend. Mike asked me one day what song I would like played on the day of my funeral. I think I said Yesterday by The Beatles. Here is the song we played for Mike in my car the day of his service.

- I got a shout out from my friend Bill Kingston News Director at Corus Cornwall. Check out his commentary on tanning beds here.

- I’m going to keep it short today. I’m suffering from info overload and I need a break.

Just how unpopular is President Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas is getting four out of 10 votes in West Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary.

I was just thinking. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Wasn’t Danielle Smith supposed to be premier? I can’t help but think Alberta is about to slip more into red Tory territory. I’ve seen what liberals do to provinces first hand. This could get ugly.

I can’t help but think the premier is in for trouble if she tries to convince Mulcair and McGuinty they need to be part of her national energy strategy. They see Alberta as evil. Even as their provinces (Ontario and Quebec) suck on Alberta’s teat.

- Keep the politics out of it.

Most people know I like to ride my bike. It’s a habit I’ve had for the last 20 years. I really enjoy hitting the road on two wheels. Up until this year it has been a breeze to find great roads to ride, but things have changed in Alberta. It has everything to do with where we settled in Strathmore. We live just to the east of Calgary in the prairie area of the province. The roads are flat and don’t go anywhere. Yesterday I planned out a ride online and thought I had a route of 60kms ahead of me, but it ended up leading me to a dirt road. Damn! In Ontario the options are endless. Planning a dozen 40, 60, 80 or 160km rides is simple.

Things are different as you approach Calgary. You immediately get into rolling terrain and are into the foothills when you get to the west side of the city. Sheila and I have given our notice in Strathmore and plan to move into the city in two months. We want to be able to access the bike paths in the city and be closer to the west and the mountains. Which brings me to something that bothers me about cycling. It’s getting political.

I have done a fair amount of driving in downtown Calgary during rush hour and I believe bikes have no business riding on roads in the downtown core. Watching people weave in and out of rush hour traffic on bikes scares the hell out of me. Put a car up against a bicycle and the bike will lose the battle every time. The roads were built for cars and cyclists are taking a big chance riding on them. Still, bicycling clubs and special interest groups are pushing for more access for bikes on roads that are jam packed with cars. More bike paths, more education for drivers, city subsidized bicycles and other pro cycling initiatives are pushed by cyclists and anti-car groups. Yet, despite years of trying to end congestion on roads in major city’s by pushing transit and bike riding, roads get busier. Why is that? Because people like the convenience of a car. The radio, the comfort and warmth in winter, the feeling of being closer to home by being in their car are why people drive. Until parking fees are too expensive for people to afford, people will drive and traffic will increase.

I ride because it allows me to forget the troubles of the day. That includes the insanity of politics. I don’t want cycling to become politicized… it dirty’s something I love. That’s why I’ll shy away from Calgary bicycle clubs. They all have their political arm. That’s a shame.

- Has it really been a year since the Liberal Party had a permanent leader?

* European welfare state.

Come on lefties, do you really want Canada to be like Europe now?

A Gallic shrug at the bond markets — more spending, financed by more borrowing — would not improve the country’s finances but rather worsen them, as lenders demanded higher interest rates to cover the increased risk of default. A Hellenic flip of the finger to the rest of Europe would not release the country from the painful adjustments it agreed to in return for the bailout. Rather, it would increase the odds of Greece being forced to exit the euro.

* I ate greasy fries with gravy at school… I’m not fat.

The government didn’t nanny state me into eating vegetables and diet drinks… I’m not fat. The government didn’t ban pizza and soft drinks… I’m not fat. What’s the problem here? It may sound simplistic, but bad parenting seems to be the problem to me. Having a Mom at home works better than the screwed up families we accept today.

Two Brampton, Ont., high school students are fighting to bring pizza, coffee and chocolate bars back into their cafeteria. Unhealthy foods were banished from the St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School cafeteria last September as part of a provincial program to make schools healthier.

[...]

Q: What do your critics say?

The comments on YouTube said something like “Spoiled brats. Be quiet and eat healthy.” They are basically telling us that students are inadequate and we can’t make these kind of decisions for themselves. But it seems kind of ironic to me that at 18, I can sign up to be part of the Canadian military but I can’t choose if I want a chocolate bar.

Bingo!

These are not officers of Parliament, like the Auditor General, part of the formal apparatus by which government is held to account. They’re lobby groups. While they may have a valid point of view, they perform no particular service that could not be obtained by other means. If a future government wants to revive them, it can.

The same applies to charitable groups. Nothing the government is proposing would forbid any of them from taking any position they like, political or otherwise, and shouting it from the rooftops, if they choose. The only question is whether they should be able to do so and still claim charitable tax status.

In a never ending effort to blame all past warming on CO2, scientists go to the ends of the Earth and the beginning of time to make themselves look stupid.

Dinosaur gases 'warmed the Earth' – BBC

With the knowledge that livestock emissions currently contribute a significant part to global methane levels, the researchers used existing data to estimate how sauropods could have affected the climate.

Their calculations considered the dinosaurs’ estimated total population and used a scale that links biomass to methane output for cattle.

Can you believe some scientist actually got paid to study dinosaur farts? It’s another effort to save the planet, don’t you know.

I only own a few complete television series on DVD. One of them is The Andy Griffith Show. Sometimes I wish we could go back to the innocence of that time. Are we really better off with Lady Gaga and Jersey Shore?

Today on Deep Cuts & Lost Classics… It’s The Who week. Today something from Quadrophenia. I think the band was at its best when they did this.
